Background
Control of electromagnetic disturbance
The EMC Directive ensures that equipment does not generate unacceptable electromagnetic disturbance and has adequate immunity to operate as intended. It covers apparatus and fixed installations under different obligations.
Scope
Most active electrical and electronic equipment
Manufacturers, importers, and distributors of apparatus are affected when a product can generate or be affected by electromagnetic disturbance. Radio equipment normally addresses EMC through RED.
Requirements
Emissions, immunity, and representative configuration
The manufacturer performs an EMC assessment for all normal intended operating conditions. Technical documentation should show product configuration, standards, test methods, results, and how variants are covered. Harmonised standards can provide presumption of conformity.
Timeline
Standard editions drive practical change
The Directive has applied since 20 April 2016. Practical changes mainly arise from new or replaced harmonised standards and from changes to electronics, cables, enclosure, or software-controlled operating modes.
Compliance
A passed test covers a defined product
If the tested and sold configurations differ, the evidence may be weakened. Deficiencies can require retesting, redesign, sales restrictions, or recall and may disrupt customers' equipment.
